Getting In Front Of The Camera : Family Photography
It is so easy as a mother to hide behind the camera and just take photographs of your children. Being a mother can really play havoc with your body and how confident you feel about yourself, so the last thing that you feel like doing is having your photograph taken.
But as a mother of four, who totally gets that 'feeling like a right mess' thing, I also know how very precious all the images I have of me with my children are. Also some of just me, to remember that as well as being a mother I am other things too! Not to forgot some photographs of Stef and me, with and without our children. Dads need to get in front of the camera too please!
I know it's not always easy but next time you all go out for the day together why not give yourself a little extra time to choose something to wear that makes you feel confident? Pop some lipstick in your bag if that helps you feel good too. Hats and sunglasses (both in Summer and on a sunny Winter day....think cute bobble hats!) can be great to wear to make you feel less self-conscious.
When you get in front of the camera I am pretty sure your children will make you smile. Just look into their eyes, fill up with that mummy love and then look into the camera. Have fun together and capture the happiness.
The minute you think "oh, no-one needs a photo with me in it today," think into the future. Imagine in ten years, twenty years time, how grateful you will be for these images. Imagine sharing them with your grandchildren and think about the lovely gift you are creating for your own children. Photographs with their mother that they will treasure forever. They will not be looking at wrinkles, wobbles, grey hairs or under eye bags. They will just see their beautiful mother and all that love and happiness.
Capture the cuddles, the giggles, the joy and the memories. You are an important part of all this. So, this weekend take a deep breath, grab your children and get in front of that camera with them! xo
My Family Storytelling Through Photography Online Course starts on Monday, running for the next two month.
