Connecting, inspiring and building a community

Makelight photography workshop

Hello lovely people! I hope you're having a good week and enjoying April so far. I am getting pretty excited today because tomorrow I'm spending the day with a group of super lovely bloggers down in Sussex. We are coming together from around the UK and Europe to spend a day taking photographs, chatting, inspiring each other and enjoying being a part of an amazing community of bloggers.

Last week I read this beautiful piece by Brittany Watson Jepsen about creating community, which totally captured how I have been feeling this year. Blogging has enabled me to be a part of a wonderful community of people and friends all over the world. It is one of the most brilliant parts of blogging and when we get the chance to connect in real life too it's even more amazing. Tomorrow is going to be very exciting and I can't wait to share it all with you soon.

Very closely connected to the community I have around blogging, is the community that I have been creating with my workshops. When I started teaching again last year I had absolutely no idea that this would happen but it soon became clear that a big part of my workshops was the connections made during the workshops and being a part of something. My students wanted to keep in touch and I started creating Facebook groups for them. And then something very special happened, some of my students came back together for a Part Two workshop!

The workshop was one of the most beautiful things I've done in my teaching so far. I hired a gorgeous, white space, big windows studio for the day. We all brought food to share for lunch. We talked and talked. We shared, inspired, took lots of photographs and none of us wanted to leave. I am already making plans for Part Three...a whole weekend workshop!

When I got home I set up a new Facebook Group, one that brings all my students from all my workshops together. And it was as I was doing that, that I really began to fully appreciate the community I have created. It made me cry happy tears. I love it so, so much and I cannot wait to connect with and inspire more people, and invite them into this beautiful community.

A couple of weeks ago I went to Birmingham and ran the prettiest workshop with my wonderful friend Allison. It was very special getting to teach with Allison. We have been friends for a long time and have been trying to make something happen together for what seems like forever. Finally the right time, right place happened and we did it. It was all that I could have hoped for and more. And once again the connecting, inspiring and community building shone throughout the day. Allison has just written this gorgeous piece about it! Yes, I think we were writing about all this loveliness right at the same time. Don't you just love it when that happens?

My workshops are so much more than just a photography workshop. They are about creativity, connecting with others, taking time out of your everyday routines and busy lives, inspiration, thinking about new ways of working and of course plenty of photography and pretty props too!

I absolutely love it when my wonderful students write about Makelight workshops and I love seeing the images they have taken on the day. It makes me super proud and happy. Take a look and be inspired:

My next workshop is in London on 12th April (£95 for the day) and you can contact me to book a place. The day is perfect for bloggers, makers and shop owners who want to improve their photography whatever camera they have from a camera phone to a dSLR.

After that I will be taking a little break from teaching to travel and write my book (yes, I have to travel overseas for my book!) but I will be back in the Autumn with some more workshops and an online workshop too, so wherever you are in the World you will be able to join the Makelight community. I am so, so excited about that!
